The Men Who Saved Ladakh

The land is so barren and the passes so high that only the best of friends or fiercest enemies would want to visit us. – A Ladhaki saying
Ladakh, the crown on India’s map, was the transit route of trading caravans to and from Central Asia with Leh as the communication and barter hub. The three valleys formed by the Indus, Zanskar and Shyok rivers provided the natural routes amidst mountains towering upto 18000 feet. Branching off from the Silk Route, caravans from Chinese Turkistan crossed over the Karakoram Pass moving along the Shyok River and onto Leh and thence along the Indus to Skardu and Gilgit West of Leh. Branching off Southwards from this route was Kargil and and across the Zojila to Srinagar. Towards the South East Leh was connected to Manali over the Rohtang Pass. The high altitude cold desert averages 11000 feet along the Indus which runs through Ladakh from East to West.
Following the Anglo Sikh War 1845-46 and the Treaty of Amritsar 1846, Jammu and Kashmir, including Ladakh and Baltistan was acquired by Maharaja Gulab Singh. British strategic interest in Baltistan bordering Afghanistan and Russia ensured constant interference in this region culminating in the entire region of Nagar, Hunza, Gilgit and Skardu being leased by the Maharaja to the British in 1935 for 60 years. With the impending lapse of British Paramountcy on 15 August 1947, the region was to technically and legally revert to Jammu and Kashmir State on that date. It was handed over by the British Political Agent to the Governor of Gilgit appointed by the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir on 30 June 1947. In a grave error of judgment, the British officers including the commander of the Gilgit Scouts, were retained by the Maharaja. A coup was staged by these officers on 31 October 1947 and the Governor imprisoned. Major Brown hoisted the Pakistani flag on 03 November 1947 and handed over the administration to Pakistan.

By Dec 1947 the small garrison at Skardu was besieged and in concert with the tribal invasion of other parts of the state, Pakistan aided tribals had advanced up the Shyok and Indus Valleys, the objective being Leh and ultimately entire Ladakh. The garrison at Skardu under Lieutenant Colonel Sher Jang Thapa of the State Forces held out for six months which proved crucial in delaying the enemy advance towards Leh.
Leh at that time was garrisoned by a platoon of 33 men of the State Forces.

With no other means available to reinforce the garrison, Major Prithi Chand and Captain Khusal Chand with a company of 2 Dogra and two platoons of the State Forces set out from Srinagar on 16 Feb 1948, across the Zojila on foot crossing it in winters perhaps for the first time. They were accompanied by the British trained Sonam Norbu, the first engineer from Ladakh. He carried Rs 13,000/- for constructing an airstrip at Leh. The party reached Leh on 08 March 1948. The alternate route for reinforcements was from Manali over the Rohtang Pass which was too long and only negotiable on foot. It too was impassable in the winters.

Major Prithi Chand commenced raising 7 J&K Militia amongst whom was a young man named Chewang Rinchen – later Colonel Chewang Rinchen, Maha Vir Chakra and Bar, Sena Medal.
Construction of the airstrip between the Indus river bed and the town commenced on 12 Mar 1948 and a 2300 yards long makeshift airstrip was ready by 6 April 1948 through sheer physical labour. It was an outstanding achievement by any standard. Norbu had spent Rs 10891/- and deposited the balance amount of Rs 2109 -in the treasury. On 6 April 1948 he sent a wireless message requesting dispatch of aircraft and reinforcements immediately.

By 22 May 1948, Zojila, Kargil and Khaltsi and Tharu – along the Indus – on the outskirts of Leh, had been captured by the raiders. The land route from Srinagar was no more available. The enemy was at the gates of Leh. With no other means of reinforcing available, Leh could only be saved by an air link.
In the pleasant surroundings of cherry trees at Baramula, Major General Thimayya invited Air Commodore Mehar Singh, commanding the Air Force in J&K, in the third week of May to a strawberry cream party – a weakness of Mehar Singh. While Thimayya urged Mehar Singh to help relieve Leh, Mehar Singh explained that the Dakota transport aircraft were not designed to operate at such altitudes. They were not pressurized, had no oxygen for the crew and limited power to fly over the 18000 foot high mountains. The weather enroute was unknown and unpredictable. The Air Force then had only one squadron of Dakota transport aircraft and was very heavily committed in ongoing operations in Kashmir and Punch. Thimayya then offered to go along with the first aircraft and share the risks with the Air Force. Mehar Singh not only relented but also decided to personally pilot the first aircraft to Leh. It was a mutual agreement between the two with no clearance from higher headquarters.

The airstrip at Leh was at approximately 11000 feet. No one had landed piston engine transport aircraft at such altitudes at that time. The airfield was aligned in a bowl with only one direction for approach and landing. The hills on the other side precluded any scope for ‘going around’ in case the approach was not right – in short it had to be right the first time. With no pressurization, no oxygen equipment, no maps, no navigation aids and no prior familiarization with the landing strip, Mehar Singh took off in a Dakota on 24 May 1948 with Flight Lieutenant SD Singh as his co pilot and with General Thimayya on board. Flying above 18000 feet and after negotiating the Zojila, Namikla and Fotula they landed at Leh. Aviation history had been created.
The weather did not permit flying for the next six days. An attempt on 31 May was frustrated by bad weather. Then on 01 June Air Commodore Mehar Singh led a flight of six Dakotas with a company of 2/4 Gurkha Rifles along with essential supplies and ammunition. After dropping the stores near the airfield Air Commodore Mehar Singh landed the first aircraft. The others followed. Leh had been reinforced. Immediately on landing the company of Gurkhas pushed westwards to hold the raiders. The local population had not seen a motor vehicle leave alone an aircraft and hurriedly brought fodder for the ‘flying horses’! A tenuous air bridge in the prevailing monsoon conditions was thereafter established.

As Zojila, Dras and Kargil were in enemy hands, the only land route available was from Manali over the Rohtang Pass.  A distance of over 475 km. A company of 2/8 Gurkha Rifles under Major Hari Chand was moved from Ferozepur to Manali on 28 May 1948. The company consisting of 151 men and carrying 600 rifles with ammunition and supplies set out on foot with all available porters and ponies. After traversing the over 17000 foot high Baralacha, Lachulung and Tanglang passes, the column Leh on 05 July 1948.
One company of 2/8 Gurkha Rifles under the commanding officer, Lt Col HS Parab, was moved from Ferozepur to Srinagar on 17 August. The Commanding Officer and the company were airlifted to Leh on 23 August. The remainder battalion moved on foot across the Rohtang pass reaching Leh on 18 September. Before being airlifted Colonel Parab had been appointed the Military Governor of Ladhak by a charter signed by Bakshi Gulam Mohammad. His orders from General Thimayya were ‘You will defend Leh at all cost’. On arrival he assumed command of all troops in Ladhak and set about pushing the raiders back.
Further reinforcements and supplies were thereafter air landed and carried across Rohtang on foot. Leh was saved and the enemy eventually pushed back. Zojila was captured on 01 Nov 1948 and Kargil on 23 Nov 1948. Colonel Parab’s troops advancing from Leh linked up with those advancing from Zojila on 24 November 1948. Further advance westward along the the Indus was stalled by the winters setting in. The cease fire followed on 01 January 1949.

#Ladhak had been saved by these intrepid men.

Sonam Norbu later joined the J&K PWD and as Chief Engineer with the Border Roads Organization was instrumental in the construction of the Srinagar – Leh road. Air Commodore Mehar Singh was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. He resigned from the Air Force in Aug 1948 and was killed in an air crash on 11 March 1952. General Thimayya went on to on to become the Chief of the Army Staff. Lt Col Sher Jang Thapa was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for the defence of Skardu. Major Hari Chand and Captain Khusal Chand were awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for their gallant actions in keeping the raiders at bay till Leh was finally relieved and secured.  Chewang Rinchen was also awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. He led his troops in the capture of Turtuk in 1971 and was awarded a Bar to the Maha Vir Chakra. The other soldiers faded away.

In a small plot on the outskirts of Leh is an enclosed compound with a dozen odd graves. Those passing by barely notice the compound. There lie some of those killed during the operations. Unsung, they too had helped save Ladhak.

शरदकालीन छोदपा सौजन्य पद्मा टिंले

शरदकालीन छोदपा

 विश्व भर में भिन्न-भिन्न देशों, प्रांतों और भागों में अनेक त्यौहार मनाए जाते हैं। नई उमंगो, उत्साहो के साथ इन पर्वों का इंतजार करते हैं। ये मेले एवं त्यौहार ऐसी ऐतिहासिक एवं सामाजिक घटनाएं होती है, जहां लोग अपनी खुशियों को परस्पर वांटते हैं। ये तीज-त्यौहार प्रायः फुर्सत के क्षणों में मनाए जाते हैं। सामाजिक जीवन में भी इनका विशेष महत्व रहता है। इन त्योहारों के आयोजन के पीछे धार्मिक आस्था हो या समाजिक, सांस्कृतिक पहलू। वास्तव में (लोक) जन भावना ही सांस्कृतिक एवं सामाजिक मूल्यों को समृद्ध करने तथा जीवन को गतिशील बनाए रखने में सहायक होती है। यद्यपि इन उत्सवों के पीछे कुछ ना कुछ ऐतिहासिक कारण तो होते ही हैं। इनकी सार्थकता तभी सिद्ध होती है जब हम इन मेलों को यथावत- पूर्ववत हर्षोल्लास के साथ मनाते हैं। ये मेले एवं त्यौहार हमारे समाज की प्राचीन सांस्कृतिक, सामाजिक एवं धार्मिक विशिष्टता और विविधता को अभिव्यक्त करते हैं। आज संभवत इनका महत्व न्यूनाधिक घट गया हो परंतु प्राचीन समय में ये मेले हमारी सांस्कृतिक पहचान, धार्मिक आस्था और जीवनशैली का महत्वपूर्ण साधन थे। इन त्योहारों के माध्यम से ही अमुक समाज की शिक्षा, धार्मिक परंपरा, जीवनशैली, समृद्ध संस्कृति आदि का दिग्दर्शन एवं आकलन किया जा सकता है।

लाहुल घाटी में भागा उपत्यका में स्थित खंङसर ग्राम जो पुराने समय में रजवाड़ों की राजधानी रही थी। उसी राजघराने में "छोदपा" नाम से अभिहित मुखौटा नृत्योत्सव को प्रतिवर्ष दो बार मनाया जाता है। ग्रीष्मकालीन एवं शरदकालीन छोदपा को स्थानीय लोग बड़े हर्षोल्लास के साथ मनाते रहे हैं।

 खंङसर राजघराने में "ग्रीष्मकालीन छोदपा" भोटपंचांग अनुसार सातवें मास की पूर्णिमा तथा "शरदकालीन छोदपा" दूसरे मास की पूर्णिमा को मनाया जाता है। शरद ऋतु के छोदपा मुखौटा नृत्योत्सव की पूर्व संध्या अर्थात चतुर्दशी को खंङसर खर (राजमहल) से कतिपय लोग जिसमें लहब्दगपा (देव पूजक) दमनपा (नगाड़ा वादक) और कुछ गीतकारों की टीम सारंङ गांव में वोनपो (ज्योतिषशास्त्री) के आमंत्रण हेतु तथा सारंङ गांव में आम जनता को प्रवेश दिलाने हेतु जाती है। जिसे "छू" के नाम से जाना जाता है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि लोसर (नववर्ष) के पश्चात साऱङ गांव (देवथान) तथा सारंङ से खंङसर तक की ऊपरी पगडंडी को देव स्थल मानते हुए जन आवागमन बंद कर दिया जाता है। "छू" हेतु जाने वाली टोली अपने साथ सारंङ योगमा के घर प्रतिष्ठापित  धर्मपाल के पूजार्थ दीपक प्रज्वलन के निमित्त घी और कपड़े का टुकड़ा (रेखा) ले जाते हैं।

इस दिन सारंङ पगपा के आंगन में सभी गांव वाले एकत्रित होते हैं। "छू" की टीम का स्थानीय अंदाज में फूल भेंट कर स्वागत किया जाता है। सर्वप्रथम स्थानीय लौकिक देवताओं की पूजा की जाती है। तदनन्तर  "छू"  में आए लोगों के साथ ग्रामवासी भी सम्मिलित होकर "तोङरोग गीत" (गोलाकार पंक्तिबद्ब आपस में हाथ पकड़कर गीत गाते हुए नृत्य) पर नृत्य किया जाता है। रात के समय सारंङ पगपा और बरजिगपा के घर सभागत मेहमानों का अतिथि सत्कार होता है। सभी ग्रामवासी भी इस टीम के साथ रात्रि आयोजन में सम्मिलित होते हैं। हर एक घर से कल्छोर (शगुन हेतु अरक) लाया जाता है। लोसर के दौरान गाए जाने वाले "ल्हरज्ञस" गीतों को भी सभी मिलकर गाते हैं। छङ, अरक आदि पेय पदार्थों का आनंद लेते हैं। स्वादिष्ट भोजन भी परोसा जाता है। दूसरे दिन सुबह 'वोनपो'  के आगमन से पूर्व "छू" की टीम पुनः खर की ओर वापिस लौट जाती है।

 पूर्णिमा के प्रातः "वोनपो" सारंङ से कुछ लोगों के साथ खंङसर खर की ओर प्रस्थान करते हैं। खंङसर खर की छत पर दो ढोल वादक उनके आगमन पर स्वागत राग (लमरग) बजाते हैं। वोनपो भी अपने घर से पूजनार्थ घी, तेल और कपड़े का टुकड़ा (रेखा) लेकर जाते हैं। वोनपो के आगमन के पश्चात राजभवन के गृहतल में बुद्बशासन की अभिवृद्धि एवं राजभवन की परिरक्षा हेतु प्रतिष्ठापित धर्मपालिका इष्ट देवी दीर्घायुष्मती की प्रतिमा के अंधेरे कक्ष के द्वार को खोला जाता है। साथ ही उत्तर दिशा में खुलने वाली खिड़की को भी खोला जाता है। वोनपो, कोमञेर (पुजारी) आदि कुछ लामागण इष्ट देवी की पूजा- अर्चना बौद्ब तांत्रिक-अनुष्ठान विधि से करते हैं। सभी मुखोटों को बंद कमरे में मौजूद लकड़ी के सन्दूकों से निकाला जाता है। सभी को कपड़ों से साफ कर मक्खन मल कर सजाया जाता है। सभी नर्तकों को विशेष प्रकार के परिधानों को पहनाकर तैयार करवाया जाता है। पूजा-पाठ के पश्चात "वोनपो" नृत्योत्सव के शुभारंभ का आदेश देता है। "ग्रीष्मकालीन छोदपा" के संबंध में कुछ वर्ष पूर्व 'कुन्जोम" नामक पत्रिका में छप चुका है। उसमें ग्रीष्म और शरद ऋतु दोनों के दौरान एक समान नृत्यों के  मंचन के संबंध में विस्तार से वर्णन किया गया है। अतः यहां फु छोदपा नृत्य और कोको छोमो नृत्य के बारे में अधिक लिखा जाएगा
1  फु छोदपा नृत्य
जैसा कि ऊपर वर्णन किया जा चुका है कि फु  छोदपा नृत्य का मंचन दोनों ऋतुओं में किया जाता है। इस नृत्य के दोनों ऋतुओं में अभिनीत शैली में लेशमात्र भी अंतर नहीं है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि सृष्टि के प्रारंभ में विशेषतः हिमालय क्षेत्र में जब मानव का उद्भव हुआ था तो बोधिसत्व पिता कपि और मां राक्षसनी के संसर्ग से संतानों की उत्पत्ति हुई। इसी के आधार पर इस नृत्य को अभिनीत किया जाता है।

2. ञिलदापा नृत्य

ग्रीष्म ऋतु में हिम सिंह और वानर नृत्य होता है परंतु शरद ऋतु में इसके स्थान पर ञिलदापा मुखौटा नृत्य होता है। इस समय लाहुल बर्फ से आच्छादित होता है। इस नृत्य में सात मुखौटाधारी नर्तक होते हैं - पहला बुजुर्ग मुखौटाधारी, दो रास्ता लगाने वाले (लमशगपा), एक तीर फेकने वाला (ञिलदापा)  दो अन्य धनुर्धारी (बोस-बोस छे छुङ) और अंत में एक नारी मुखौटाधारी (करमोकर)।

 श्री लालचंद प्रार्थी द्वारा प्रणीत 'कुलूत देश की कहानी' और श्री पदमचंद्र कश्यप ने "कूलुई लोक साहित्य" में महाभारत से जुड़ी पौराणिक जनश्रुति एवं किंबदन्ती का जिक्र किया है। उस किंबदंती के अनुसार महाभारत के महाप्रस्थानिक पर्व में युधिष्ठिर ने श्रीकृष्ण और यदुवंशियों के संहार का समाचार सुना तब महाप्रस्थान का निर्णय लिया। पांडव जब महाप्रस्थान के लिए "हिम भन्त महागिरीम" की ओर निकले तो मार्ग में कुलूत देश में पहुंचे। वहां भीम ने अपने वनवास के दौरान हिडिंबा के साथ शादी कर ली थी। राक्षस प्रवृत्ति वाले हिडिंबा का भाई लोगों पर अत्याचार करता था। भीम ने उसका वध कर दिया। तण्डी की पुत्री सुदंगी से विदुर का विवाह कर दिया। जबकि महाभारत में विदुर अविवाहित रहे। उसके दो पुत्र भोट और मकड़ पैदा हुए। भोट से लाहौल-स्पीति, लद्दाख आदि देश बसा तो दूसरे मकड़ से वर्तमान कुल्लू बसा।

 किंबदंती के अनुसार जब पांडव हिमवन्त देश की ओर अग्रसर थे तो रोहतांग दर्रे को पार कर लाहुल में प्रवेश किए। यहां के स्थानीय वासियों द्वारा उनका आदर सत्कार किया गया। इस नृत्योत्सव में भी हिमालय में विचरते हुए अर्जुन आदि धनुर्धरों द्वारा बाण चलाने तथा द्रौपदी के साथ  प्रेमालाप करने की नृत्य कला को बखूबी दर्शाया गया है।

जैसा कि ऊपर कहा गया है कि पहला बुजुर्ग नर्तक जो विदुर के रूप में हाथ में डंडा लिए, उसके बाद पांच मुखौटा नर्तक जो हाथ में धनुष बाण लिए होते हैं पांच पांडव भाइयों के प्रतीक हैं। अंत में नारी नर्तक द्रौपदी के रूप में है। वह भी धनुष-बाण लिए है। यहां यह उल्लेखनीय है कि स्थानीय भाषा में इन्हें क्रमशः बगगदपो (विदुर), लमशगपा ञी (युधिष्ठिर और भीम), ञिलदापा (अर्जुन) (मुखौटे मस्तक पर सूर्य और चंद्र का चित्रण) बोस-बोस छेनपो और छुङ (नकुल और सहदेव) और करमोकर (द्रौपदी) कहा जाता है। यह सात मुखौटाधारी नर्तक गृहतल में मौजूद कक्ष के उत्तरी दिशा के किवाड़ से बाहर निकलते हैं। इसके साथ एक नगाड़ा-वादक भी बाहर खिड़की के दोनों ओर बैठकर लमशगपा राग अर्थात  मार्ग खोलने का विशेष राग बजाते हैं। राग बजते ही पहला लमशगपा अर्थात धनुर्धारी राजमहल से पूर्व दिशा की ओर बढ़ता हुआ बर्फ से कुछ दूरी तक रास्ता लगाता है। बीच-बीच में नगाड़ा-बादकों  के शुग-शुग राग (बलि विसर्जन राग) पर तीर फेंकने का अभिनय करता है। इस प्रकार कुछ दूरी तय करने के पश्चात वह पुनः ऊपर की ओर जाता है। राजमहल से कुछ दूरी पर पांच छोरतेन (स्तूप) बने हैं, वहां पहुंचकर दूसरों की प्रतीक्षा में रहता है। इसके पश्चात लमशगपा उसी रास्ते से नीचे पूर्व दिशा की ओर बढ़ता है। विशेष प्रकार के राग बजते रहते हैं। लमशगपा दो गुना रास्ता लगा कर पुनः उसी नृत्यशैली को अभिनीत कर छोरतेन के पास लौटता है।

 अंत में ञिलदापा उसी विशेष राग पर नृत्य करते हुए तीन गुना रास्ता तयकर दो बार तीर छोड़ने का असफल प्रयास करता है। अंत में शुग-शुग राग पर एक तीर को छोड़ दिया जाता है। तीर छोड़ते समय मेले में आए लोग सीटी बजाते हैं। माना जाता है कि ऐसा करने से सारी दुष्ट आत्माएं, भूत-प्रेत, पिशाच, अमानुषी आपदाओं आदि का शमन एवं दमन हो जाता है। तीर छोड़ने के पश्चात ञिलदापा और पूर्व दो लमशगपा छोरतेन की परिक्रमा कर लौटते हैं। इधर राजमहल के ऊपर बने छोरतेन के सामने बगगदपो, बोस-बोस छे-छुङ और करमाकर उन तीनों के इन्तजा़र में रहते हैं। बीच-बीच में बोस-बोस छे-छुङ करमोकर को यदा-कदा पकड़कर आलिंगन करने का हास्यास्पद अभिनय करते हैं। उन तीनों के पहुंचने पर सभी नर्तक एक साथ मुख्य द्वार में प्रवेश कर नृत्यशाला में पहुंचते हैं।

अंदर नृत्यशाला में राजभवन का पुजारी पहले से ही बर्फ के त्रिकोण बलि को बना कर रखता है। उसमें सरसों के सूखे पौधों की डालियों को चुभोकर  रखता है। सभी मुखौटाधारी नर्तक बाहर से आते समय अपने तीरों के सिरे पर बर्फ के छोटे-छोटे गोले लगा कर लाते हैं। आते ही नृत्यशाला के उर्ध्वभाग में क्रमशः खड़े हो जाते हैं। इसी उर्ध्वभाग के ऊपरी कक्ष जिसे जबखङ ञीङपा (पुराना अतिथि कक्ष) कहा जाता है, में ठाकुर, ठकुराइन, कुलीन वर्ग, शाही मेहमान, पुजारी आदि बैठते हैं। वस्तुतः इन उत्सवों में शाही लोग इसी कक्ष की खिड़की से नृत्योत्सव का आनंद लेते हैं। पुजारी उक्त कक्ष की खिड़की से नर्तकों के हाथ से एक-एक तीर ले लेता है।

इसके पश्चात ऊपर कक्ष में पुजारी आवाज देते हुए कुछ प्रश्न पूछता है। सभी नर्तक ऊपर की ओर मुड़ जाते हैं। पुजारी पूछता है-रोहतांग में कितनी बर्फ थी? नर्तक इशारों से अपने हाथों को छाती तक ले जाते हैं। क्या आंखें तो नहीं जली? सभी नर्तक अपनी आंखों पर हाथ रखकर नहीं-नहीं का संकेत करते हैं। इस वर्ष क्या फसल अच्छी होगी? सभी नर्तक अपने तोंद पर हाथ घुमाने का अभिनय करते हैं। इस प्रकार कई प्रश्न पूछे जाते हैं। इन प्रश्नों से साफ जाहिर होता है कि लोग सुख, समृद्धि और खुशहाली की कामना करते हैं। इसी बीच "करमोकर"  एक झाड़ू ले आता है। ऊपर बुजुर्ग नर्तक से लेकर क्रमशः सभी नर्तकों के पावों से बर्फ हटाता है। जैसे ही बोस-बोस छे-छुङ के पास पहुंचता है उन दोनों के सिर पर झाड़ू से मारता है। वे दोनों भी उसे पकड़कर जबरन प्रेम बद्ब आलिंगन आदि करने का हास्यास्पद अभिनय करते हैं। इसके पश्चात वह पुनः एक खेम (काष्ठ निर्मित बेलचा) ले आता है। जमीन पर गिरी सारी बर्फ को हटाते हुए ऊपर से क्रमशः नीचे बोस-बोस छे-छुङ  तक पहुंच कर पुनः उनके सिर पर खेम चला देता है। दोनों बचने की कोशिश करते हैं। जिससे रुष्ट होकर दोनों उसके ऊपर चढ़ जाते हैं। यदा-कदा अश्लील एवं हास्यास्पद हरकतें करने का अभिनय भी करते हैं। पूरी दर्शक दीर्घा में हंसी- खुशी का माहौल बन जाता है। अंत में वह एक "पिल" (कास्ठ निर्मित छाननी) ले आता है। उसे घुमा-घुमाकर सभी नर्तकों को शुद्धि करने का अभिनय करते हुए दोनों बोस-बोस के सिर दे मारता है और शीघ्र वहां से भाग जाता है।

तदनन्तर बर्फ से निर्मित बिशेष बलि के सामने सभी नर्तक नगाड़े के विशेष राग पर नृत्य करते हुए सामने आते हैं। इसी बीच "करमोकर" अपने हाथों से बलि का इशारा करते हुए बाहर चले जाने का आह्वान करता है। करमोकर बलि को तिपाई के तिकोने फलक पर रख देता है। तीनों ओर काठू के सत्तू के त्रिकोणाकार बनाते हुए एक लंबी रेखा खींच ली जाती है। जो उसके मार्ग के रूप में दिक दर्शन कराती है। अतः बलि को तीन अलग-अलग जगहों पर रखा जाता है। ढोल नगाड़ों के विशेष राग पर "करमोकर" के शारीरिक एवं हाथों के अभिनयपूर्वक संकेतों से तीसरी बार शुग-शुग राग पर सीटी, आवाज आदि देते हुए बलि को फेंक दिया जाता है। इस प्रकार अपशकुनों का उपशमन हो जाता है।

इसके पश्चात सभी नर्तक "ञिलदापा-राग" पर नृत्यशाला में अलग-अलग अदाओं, हावभावों वाली नृत्यशैली में छह बार नृत्यशाला की परिक्रमा कर नृत्यकला का प्रदर्शन करते हैं। इसी बीच "करमोकर" नृत्यशाला में मौजूद किसी औरत जिसने चादर ओढ़ रखी है, से जबरन चादर खींच ले जाता है। चादर को नीचे जमीन पर बिछाता है। खर के अंदर से "कलछोर" अर्थात शगुण हेतु केतली भर "छङ" पहुंचता है। चादर पर बैठकर "करमोकर" तीर के सिरे को "छङ" की केतली में डालते हुए ऊपर नीचे डालता है जो शगुण का प्रतीक है। यह शागुण मुलला सोनमपा (ग्राम देवता ऋषि) के नाम पूजा जाता है।

पुनः इसके बाद नृत्यशाला में धनुषबाण को दोनों हाथों से पकड़कर ढोल-नगाड़ों के विशेष राग पर नृत्य का प्रदर्शन होता है। बीच-बीच में दर्शकों के मध्य कुछ मनचले लड़के- लड़कियां "करमोकर" को दर्शक दीर्घा के पीछे छुपा देते हैं। और जोर-जोर से चिल्लाते हुए पूछते हैं- "ज्ञालपो भोनग ख्योद अने गरु योद? (ज्ञालपो भोनग तुम्हारी पत्नी कहां है?) दोनों बोस-बोस छे-छुङ उसे ढूंढते हुए इधर-उधर भटकते हैं। दर्शक दीर्घा में बैठे लोगों के बीच अपने हाथ में धारण किए धनुष के सिरे को आगे रख दौड़ पड़ते हैं। मानो कि उस से दर्शकों को बींध या चुभो दे। इस प्रकार चारों तरफ इसी शैली को अपनाते हुए "करमोकर" को ढूंढ लेते हैं। पुनः हास्यास्पद हरकतों के अभिनय से दर्शकों को मंत्रमुग्ध कर देते हैं। पूरा वातावरण ठहाकों से गूंज उठता है। इस प्रकार तीन बार नृत्यशाला की परिक्रमा विशेष नृत्यशैली का प्रदर्शन करते हुए वापिस लौट जाते हैं।

 यहां उल्लेखनीय है कि ग्रीष्मकालीन छोदपा के दौरान हिम सिंह-वानर नृत्य में बजाए जाने वाले राग-थाप के समान शरदकालीन "ञिलदापा" के राग में किंचित अन्तर भर है। ढोल-नगाड़ों के थाप में एकाध थाप का ही फर्क है। गर्मियों के छोदपा में उसे थोड़ा ऊंची आवाज और सर्दियों के छोदपा में राग थोड़ी नीची आवाज में सुना जा सकता है। अतः कुल मिलाकर दोनों ऋतुओं के छोदपा मुखौटा नृत्योत्सव के विभिन्न नृत्यों के अनुसार ढोल- नगाड़ों के राग भी भिन्न-भिन्न है।

3. छोमो कुकु-बग चोङ चोङ

 इस नृत्यकला के संबंध में उपरोक्त पत्रिका में छप चुका है। इसमें विशेषतः पंच पूजनीय देवियों की नृत्यकला का प्रदर्शन होता है। विस्तृत जानकारी के लिए "कुन्ज़ोम" पत्रिका को पढ़े। अंत में "वोनपो" द्वारा मंगल पूजन कर कक्ष के द्वार को अगले छः महीने के लिए बंद करवा दिया जाता है।

 उल्लेखनीय है कि राजघराने में मौजूद मुखौटों में हिम सिंह और वानर मुखौटे लकड़ी से तथा अन्य मुखौटे कपड़े के ऊपर चिकनी मिट्टी के लेप को चढा़कर बनाया गया है। मुखौटों की कलाकृति को देख कर ऐसा लगता है मानो इन्हें मंजे हुए कलाकार ने बनाया है। कला की दृष्टि से यह भोट कला से प्रभावित है। सभी मुखौटे विभिन्न रंगों से चित्रित किए गए हैं। लेकिन काल की गति ने इन्हें भी नहीं बख्शा है। कुछ मुखौटे नष्ट प्राय हैं। साथ ही इनके परिधान विचित्र रंगो वाले बस्त्रों से निर्मित हैं जो अब काल का ग्रास बन गए हैं।

 परंपरानुसार इस शरदकालीन छोदपा के पश्चात कुछ दिनों के भीतर खङसर खर से कुछ लोग दारचा में स्थानीय देवता "कुन्दुरु" के दर्शनार्थ जाते हैं। "कुन्दुरू" खङसर खर का भी देवता है। स्थानीय भाषा में इस दर्शन को "छग" (दर्शन या प्रणाम) कहा जाता है। कुछ लोग जिसमें लब्दगपा,दमनपा, कुछ गीतकार और दो व्यक्ति (नगाड़ों तथा बकरों को ढोने वाले) एक बकरा लेकर वर्फ के बीच रास्ता लगाकर निकलते हैं। दूसरे दिन प्रातः जिसपा से प्रस्थान कर दारचा पहुंचते हैं। ग्रामवासी मेहमानों को आदर- भोजन कराते हैं। देवता के थान पर बकरे की बलि चढ़ाई जाती है। दारचा ग्राम वासियों द्वारा रात्रिभोज का आयोजन किया जाता है। रात्रि भोज में मांस-मदिरा के साथ-साथ ल्हरज्ञस, डललू, झुंङलू आदि गीत भी गाए या गवाए जाते हैं। शोनलू पर सभी लोग नाचते भी है। दूसरे दिन सुबह "छग" की टोली खङसर वापिस लौट जाती है।

 अत्यंत खेद के साथ कहना पड़ता है कि यह परंपराएं अब खत्म कर दी गई है। इधर कई वर्षों से छोदपा नृत्योत्सव का आयोजन भी बंद कर दिया गया है। इन सबके पीछे संभवतः सबसे बड़ा कारण तो  शिक्षा का आधुनिकीकरण और पुरानी संस्कृति एवं परंपराओं के प्रति उदासीन रवैया या नकारात्मक सोच ही है।


अंत में पाठकों से इस बात को सांझा करना आवश्यक समझता हूं। आज औद्योगिक क्रांति, वैश्वीकरण, तकनीकी विकास, उपभोक्तावादी संस्कृति और आधुनिकता के इस दौर में न केवल लाहुल-स्पीति अपितु संपूर्ण हिमालय में नवीन सामाजिक, राजनैतिक, सांस्कृतिक, आर्थिक एवं व्यवसायिक समीकरण बनने लगे हैं। फलतः हिमालयी लोग अपनी प्राचीन सांस्कृतिक परंपराओं, मान्यताओं और धारणाओं को भूलने लगे हैं। प्राचीन परंपराओं के विखंडन और सांस्कृतिक मूल्यों के ह्रास के कारण आज समाज में अनेकबिध विकृतियां पनपने लगी है। अतः हमें आज नवीनता को अपनाते हुए प्राचीन को भी नहीं भूलना है। अर्थात प्राचीन सांस्कृतिक परंपराओं, रीति-रिवाजों का पोषण ही हो जो श्रेष्ठ जीवन मूल्यों से संबद्ध हो। यदि इसमें कई प्रकार की विकृतियां हो तो उन्हें त्यागना ही श्रेयस्कर है। चूंकि समय गतिशील है। परिवर्तन प्रकृति का नियम है। अतः प्राचीन स्वस्थ परंपरा के साथ नवीनता का समुचित समन्वय स्थापित कर नयी सांस्कृतिक चेतना के साथ संवेदनशील समाज के निर्माण की आवश्यकता है। जो मूल्य पर आधारित हो और वही जीवन एवं सामाजिक मूल्य संस्कृति, परंपराओं और शिक्षा के माध्यम से पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी संरक्षित होकर समाज को आलौकित करे। इसी आशा के साथ।

Respected  Sir,

                  Warm greetings from Lahaul & Spiti!



We write this to humbly submit that, as you are aware, the remote tribal district of Lahaul- Spiti which shares its border with Tibet, is spread over small villages in three sub divisions of Keylong and Udaipur in Lahaul valley  and Kaza in  Spiti valley and happens to be the largest district of the state  having geographical area of 13835 sq kms and  constitutes 24.85% of total area of the state. 



The rugged mountainous terrain,  extremely harsh climatic conditions  accompanied by heavy snowfall during winter months- all combine to  severely  impact the living as well as the  health conditions of the people of the district.

Chronic deseases and other common ailments

Although no systematic studies  have so far been  carried out, available information suggests that chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and arthritis are on the increase. Nearly 70 per cent of all deaths in the district  are caused by chronic or so-called lifestyle diseases which appear now to occur at a relatively younger age.  Acute respiratory diseases and reproductive-tract infections especially women are also common in the district.  According to NFHS-4, nutritional anaemia among children and women in the district of 94% and 85% is a matter of serious concern.

An outbreak of hepatitis B virus has recently been reported in Spiti valley where nearly 16 per cent people tested  positive for hepatitis B which is 8-times higher than the  national average of 2-3%. 

Health facilities

Health services in the district provided through a network of 36 sub centres; 16 primary health centres (PHCc); 3 community health centres ( at Shansha, Udaipur and Kaza),  and a Regional Hospital  at Keylong are perennially plagued with staff shortages as testified by the following data on vacant posts which vary from 28% among staff nurses to 100% in case of specialists and lab technicians.

1) Total posts (medical and paramedical): 445, Vacant: 225 (53%)

Medical officers: Sanctioned: 49; Vacant 22 (45%)

Specialist posts: sanctioned: 7; Vacant: 7 (100%)

Dental surgeon posts: Sanctioned:  8; Vacant: 7 (87%)

Staff Nurse: Sanctioned:  39; Vacant:  11 (28%)

Laboratory Technician: Sanctioned:  16; Vacant:  16(100%) 

2) At PHC level,  of the 22 posts of medical officers, 7 posts(32%) are vacant. Four PHCs ( at Sissu, Hinsa, Kibber, and Rangrik) are functioning without  Medical officer, 11 PHCs  are without  staff nurse  and 15 PHCs are  without  lab technician. None of the PHCs has a health educator or a program manager. In the absence of health educator or program manager  in the PHCs,  the lone  doctor in each of the PHCs  has to spend much of his/her time in carrying out administrative work  which leaves very little time for  attending to  patients.

3) There are 37 sub centres and out of 37 posts of  male  health workers, 25 posts(68%) are lying vacant.

4) At the Regional Hospital at Keylong,15 (71%) of the 21 posts of medical officers  are lying  vacant including all the  7 posts of specialists. Thus there is not a single surgeon,  anaesthetist, obs/gynecologist,paediatrician, public health specialist, or a general medicine specialist in the Regional Hospital and, indeed, in the entire district. These 7 posts of specialists  have been lying vacant for the past many years.

5) The district does not have a single private  hospital or a physician with the result that  people have to depend entirely on the government health facilities which, as is evident from the above facts,  are far from being adequate even  to  provide  basic health services to the people given  the fact that  large number of posts of medical and paramedical staff  are lying vacant and there is not a single specialist in the entire  district and diagnostic facilities available  are highly inadequate.

Infrastructure at Regional Hospital, Keylong

1) There is no intensive care unit in the Regional Hospital

2) Internet connectivity in the hospital premises is  intermittent, having to depend largely on VSAT. This severely impacts the overall functioning of the Regional Hospital.

3) The operation theatre  is in a non-operational state, without  blood bank and without  an anaesthetist and a surgeon. Also, there is no  radiotherapy service  available in the Regional Hospital.

4) The labour room  is not of much use in the absence of  services of a gynecologist. The post of  gynecologist has  been lying vacant  for a long time.

5) Tele-medicine service  is available in collaboration with Apollo Hospital, Chennai which is  connected via VSAT. Due to geographical distance between the Lahaul-Spiti and Chennai, follow up visits by patients to Apollo Hospital, Chennai  is almost  impossible with the  result that  this service is not of much practical use. The Regional Hospital is not  linked  with IGMC Shimla, Dr Rajendra Prasad Govt Medical College Kangra at Tanda or  with PGIMER Chandigarh, all of which are  closer to the district as compared to  Chennai and, therefore, much more convenient from the point of view of patients’ follow up visits.

Equipments available

X-ray machines  available at Keylong and Udaipur are totally outdated (1997 vintage). Same is the case with  ultrasound machines.  There is no facility for CT Scan, no treadmill and no  TMT facility.  Equipments required for  retinoscopy, audiometry, bronchoscopy and opthalmoscope are  not available. Ventilator is in a damaged condition and the  same is  kept in the store.

Diagnostic services

Only routine test facilities are  available in the Regional Hospital.  There is no facility for culture sensitivity and ELISA test.

Pregnancy and child birth

Absence of gynecologist in the Regional Hospital and, indeed, in the entire district  leaves  the  pregnant women with no option but  to move to hospitals in Kullu involving several hours of back-breaking  journey, for antenatal follow up and child delivery. Same is not possible during winter months when the Rohtang pass remains snowbound, except through occasional and irregular  helicopter service which is often not available when a pregnant woman needs it the most.

Difficulties caused by the woefully inadequate medical facilities in the district

Even though, as mentioned earlier, Lahaul -Spiti is  the largest district of Himachal Pradesh in terms of area and one of the bigger districts in the whole country, the medical facilities available in the district are abysmal and  woefully inadequate.

During winter months, due to heavy snow on the Rohtang pass (13050 ft above  sea level),  critically ill patients of Lahoul valley have to be airlifted outside the district  for proper investigation and  treatment. Apart from the prohibitive cost involved in arranging airlift  which majority of the people living  in the district can ill  afford,  helicopter service is not easily available when needed the most and,  in emergency situations, any delay in airlifting the patient  can have fatal consequences.  Even though patients in critical condition who need urgent medical attention  can also be transported outside the district through Rohtang tunnel but the same is possible only if the Border Roads Organisation officials allow the patients to be transported through  tunnel in view of  the fact that tunnel is still not complete  and the same is yet to be  thrown open to vehicular traffic. It would be pertinent to mention here in this connection that, due to poor medical facilities available in the district, during the last winter, as many as 158 patients were referred from Lahaul valley to hospitals in Kullu and 10 patients were referred from Spiti valley to  hospitals outside the valley.

Even during  summer months, in the absence of adequate medical facilities in the district, critically ill patients  have to be transported through Rohtang pass only at  grave risk to their life given the fact that it  involves painstaking journey for several hours.

Denial of adequate medical facilities in the district amounts to denial of Right to Life as interpreted by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in its various rulings

1)    In Devika Biswas vs UOI & ors, it was held by the Hon’ble Supreme Court that it is well established that Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution includes right to lead a dignified and meaningful life and right to health is an integral facet of this right.

2)    In Consumer Education and Research Centre vs UOI (21), the Hon’ble Supreme Court held that right to health was an integral part of a meaningful right to life and that right to health and medical care is a Fundamental Right under Article 21.

3)    In Paschim Banga Khet Mazdoor Samity vs State of West Bengal & ors (23), it was held by the Hon’ble Supreme Court that under Welfare State Policy, primary duty of the govt is to provide adequate medical facilities for its people.

Since, at present, even basic medical facilities are not available in the district with a large number of posts of medical staff including specialists and paramedical staff lying vacant nor are there adequate diagnostic facilities available, the same constitutes clear and flagrant  violation of the abovementioned rulings of the Hon’ble Supreme Court.

Discrimination against the Scheduled Tribes population of the district

Since Lahaul-Spiti is a tribal district, the utterly pathetic condition of the medical facilities and lack of diagnostic facilities in the district also amounts to discrimination against the ST population of the district.

Relief sought

In view of the above facts, it is  most humbly requested that the govt may kindly  ensure  that proper medical and health care facilities are made available in the district on  priority basis by filling up vacancies of medical and paramedical staff including specialists and by providing  requisite diagnostic facilities. This is particularly necessary in view of the remoteness of the district  which makes it extremely difficult for the critically ill patients living in the district  to reach hospitals outside the district in time for getting  specialised medical service.

Need for providing incentives to doctors and paramedical staff serving in Lahaul-Spiti district



In view of remoteness of the district and its geographical isolation and difficult working and living conditions including inclement weather and hostile climatic conditions  accompanied by heavy snowfall  during winter month, the govt is requested to provide suitable financial incentives to the  medical and paramedical staff serving in the district. They must also be provided with suitable housing facilities. It should also be ensured  that, as soon as the fixed period of posting (two winters and one summer) is over, they must be posted out of the district without any delay  by asking them to indicate three choices  and posting them to one of the three places indicated by them and by exempting  them from having to approach politicians for recommending their transfer in writing as is the existing practice as the same causes inordinate delays. If it is not possible to post them to one of the three places indicated by them, reasons  for the same should be recorded on file by the competent authority and communicated to the concerned medical/paramedical staff. However, in case of those who are willing to serve in the district beyond fixed period, same should be allowed.

Incentives provided to the medical doctors and paramedical staff by various states for working in rural/remote areas



 It would be pertinent to mention here that as many as 18 states are providing various incentives for the doctors and paramedical staff for serving in rural and remote areas. To cite a few instances, in Odisha, doctors are paid upto Rs 80000 in addition to their salary for serving in the remotest parts of the state. Doctors posted in the remote, tribal and Naxalite violence affected areas in Chhatisgarh are paid upto Rs 70000 in addition to salary and, in addition, they are also paid Rs 30000 as performance related bonus. Specialists are paid a salary of about Rs 2 lakhs for serving in such areas of the state. In Maharashtra, doctors serving in difficult areas are paid extra pay grade and NPA as 50% of basic pay . Specialists serving in rural areas of the state are paid 3 increments(in case of diploma holders) and 6 increments(in case of PG degree holders). Under NHM, Govt of India provides incentives such as hard area allowance for doctors serving in rural and remote areas as well as residential quarters for doctors so that they find it attractive to serve in such areas. Haryana, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Rajasthan and Tripura and Tamil Nadu  provide additional monetary incentives not only to doctors but also to ANMs, nurses and paramedics while many of the states provide additional monetary incentives to  doctors only.



We, therefore, humbly submit even at the cost of repetition that the situation with regard to medical and healthcare facilities in the district  cannot and will not improve unless suitable financial incentives as well as comfortable housing facilities are provided to the health staff posted in the district and fixity of tenure is assured. As suggested above,  the  medical and paramedical staff should remain  assured of  their transfer outside the district soon after completion of their tenure, without having to approach politicians to recommend their transfer in writing as is the existing practice. Unless such policies are adopted and put in practice, they will continue to feel reluctant to serve in the district for reasons stated in foregoing paras and the district will continue to have large number of vacancies of medical and paramedical staff as is the case at present.

देवदार और चीड़ के छितरे जंगल के मध्य‍ से मोड़ के बाद मोड़ वाली संकरी सड़क से अपने दिल को थामे जब श्री त्रिलोकनाथ मंदिर के पास पहुंचते हैं, तो अपने तन मन में एक अलौकिक भाव की अनुभूति होती है । ऐसा आभास होता है मानो आप वास्तव में एक ऐसे लोक में पहुंच गए हैं जो कल्पना और सपनों वाले स्वर्ग का अहसास कराता है । मन और मस्तिष्क  दोनों अभिभूत होकर कुछ सोचने की बजाए केवल वाह वाह कर उठता है !  और, भगवान त्रिलोकनाथ के प्रति मन में श्रद्धा और समर्पण की ऐसी उत्कहट भावना जाग उठती कि व्य क्ति जैसे अपना सुध बुघ खोकर किसी दूसरी ही दुनिया में पहुंचा हुआ अनुभव करता है । ऊपर आसमान की ओ देखे, तो लगता है आकाश पृथ्वी से मिलने को आतुर है क्योंकि आकाश बहुत पास में दिखता है । ऐसा लगता है, मानो पर्वत के शिखर अपने शीश को झुकाकर लोगों के आगमन पर हर्षित होकर आकाश को अपने शीश में उठाए स्वागत  कर रहे हैं । पर्वत की ये धाराएं और उनके शिखर नैसर्गिक सौंदर्य और हरीतिमा से लहलहा रही होती हैं । जिस ओर भी दृष्टि उठाकर देखें,  सब ओर जलधारा के साथ -साथ घाटी सी बन गई है । बेशक वे नाले ही हैं । लेकिन स्वच्छ , शीतल पानी पूरे वेग से बहता हुआ सबको अचंभित करने के साथ ही मानसिक  शांति और सुकून का अहसास कराता है । ऊंचे शिखरों पर जुलाई माह में भी मटमैली हो गई बर्फ की परतों के अवशेष पड़े दिख जाते हैं । यहां की प्राकृतिक रूप छटा और अवर्णनीय सौंदर्य को देख हर कोई चमत्कृत सा खड़ा रह जाता है ।

संकरी, चमकीली चट्टानों से सटी सड़क और नीचे वेग से बहती चन्द्रूभागा नदी है !  चन्द्रभाग नदी आगे जाकर जम्मू् कश्मीर से होती हुई चिनाब नदी के नाम से पाकिस्ताान पहुंचती है । चन्द्र भागा नदी  के किनारे किनारे गाड़ी में दिल कड़ा करके बैठे रहने के पश्चात जब तीनों लोकों के स्वामी भगवान शिव की भूमि त्रिलोकनाथ में प्रवेश करते हैं, तो रास्ते  की सारी थकावट, धूल- मिट्टी से अटी सड़क के गड्ढों के धक्के भूल जाते हैं । यह पर्वतीय क्षेत्र लाहुल का ऐसा भाग है जहां हिंदूु   बहुसंख्या  में हैं और पूरा क्षेत्र शिवमय है । लेकिन भगवान शिव के साथ भगवान बुद्ध का भी उतना ही प्रभाव है और उतनी ही श्रद्धा तथा भक्ति भावना है । त्रिलोकनाथ गांव जिला मुख्यालय केलंग से लगभग 50 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है । त्रिलोकीनाथ का मंदिर शिखर शैली में निर्मित है । मंदिर की बनावट कला और वास्तु  शिल्प का बेजोड़ नमूना है । इतिहासकारों का मानना है कि इस मंदिर को
चंबा के राजा ललितादित्य् ने नवीं- दसवीं शताब्दी के दौरान निर्माण कराया था । कुछ इतिहासकार यह भी मानते हैं कि इस प्राचीन हिंदू मंदिर  का निर्माण चंबा के राजा अलबर सेन की पत्नी रानी सुल्तान देवी ने नवीं- दसवीं शताब्दीं के दौरान किया था । निर्माण संबंधी तथ्यों में मतभिन्नता हो सकती है । लेकिन यह निर्विवाद है कि इसे चंबा के राजवंशों द्वारा निर्मित किया गया था । श्री त्रिलोकनाथ जी का मंदिर प्राचीन हिंदू  मंदिरों में से एक है । ऐसा माना जाता है कि राजा का बोधिसत्वा आर्य अवलोकीतेश्वर के प्रति अगाध श्रद्धा और भक्ति भावना  होने के कारण उन्होंने तीनों लोकों के स्वामी भगवान शिव के साथ भगवान बुद्ध की प्रतिमा स्थापित की थी ।  

त्रिलोकनाथ दो संस्कृतियों, संस्कारों, दो धर्मों, अनुयायिओं, मान्यताओं और मर्यादाओं का संगम स्थल है । गर्मीं के मौसम में हिंदु और बौध दोनों ही धर्मों के लोग हजारों की संख्या में दर्शनार्थ, मन्नत मांगने अथवा मन्नत पूरी होने पर आभार व्यहक्त करने, प्रियजनों के बिछुड़ जाने के उपरान्त  तीर्थ स्थल का दर्शन करने के साथ साथ अपने उद्गारों, श्रद्धांजलि सुमन अर्पित, समर्पित करने आते हैं । त्रिलोकनाथ का मंदिर एक टीलेनुमा चट्टान  पर बना हुआ  है । चट्टान से नीचे हजारों फुट गहरी खाई है । दूर से ही मंदिर के शिखर से लहराता केसरिया ध्वज और सामने डोरियों से बंधे, टंगे बौध धर्म के पवित्र और आदर, मान का प्रतीक खत्तक, छपी हुई रंगीन पताकाएं, सफेद रेशमी दुपट्टा अथवा वस्त्र सभी दिशाओं में  फैले हवा में झूलते, फरफराते नजर आते हैं ।

किंवदंती है कि त्रिलोकनाथ गांव में  एक पुहाल (चरवाहा/गड़रिया ) रहता था । वह गांव वालों की भेडें चराता था । वह सुबह अपनी भेड़ों को चराने के लिए पर्वत शिखरों तक ले जाता था । भेड़ों के साथ साथ पर्वत शिखरों पर चढ़ते, चलते थक जाता, तो कुछ समय के लिए विश्राम करने के उद्देश्य से सो जाता था । इस दौरान स्वेर्गलोक की परियां आकर भेड़ों के दूध निकाल लेती थी । चरवाहे को कुछ पता नहीं चलता था । शाम को गांव के लोग जब पाते कि उनकी भेड़ों के दूध किसी ने निकाल लिया है, तो वे चरवाहे पर शक करते और उसे बुरा -भला कहते । गड़रिया बिना कसूर मन मसोसकर रह जाता ।
एक दिन उसने ठान लिया कि देखें भेड़ों को कौन दुह लेता है । इस रहस्य  को जानने के लिए उसने नींद में होने  का बहाना किया । उसने देखा, अनिंद्यय सौंदर्य वाली सात परियां भेड़ों के बीच आकर भेड़ों को दुहने लगी हैं । चरवाहे ने आज अपनी आंखों से उन्हें देख लिया था । उसने एक परी को पकड़ लिया और अपनी पीठ पर उठाकर गांव की ओर इस आशय से चल पड़ा कि गांव को दिखा सके कि भेड़ों का दुध चुराने वाली को उसने आज पकड़ लिया है । अपने साथी परी को चरवाहे की पकड़ से छुड़वाने के लिए अन्य छह परियां भी गड़रिया के पीछे चल पड़ी । जिस परी को गड़रिया ने पकड़ कर अपनी पीठ पर उठा रखा था, उसने अपना परिचय देते हुए गड़रिया को बताया कि वह परी है और शर्त के अनुसार पकड़ी गई परी को अपनी पीठ पर उठाए पुहाल आगे आगे चलता रहा और छह अन्य  परियां पीछे । चलते चलते चरवाहे को जिज्ञासा होने लगी और उसे लगा कि वह मूर्ख तो नहीं बन गया है । इस विचार के आते ही वह शर्त को भूल गया । उसने पीछे मुड़कर देखा । एक परी उसकी पीठ में और छह परियां परियां पीछे आ रही थीं । लेकिन पीछे मुड़ककर देख्तेउ ही गड़रिया शैल हो गया ।

सात परियां सात धाराओं के रूप में आज भी त्रिलोकनाथ मंदिर के सामने से निकलती हैं, और चन्द्रभागा नदी में समा जाती है । मान्यता है कि इन सात धाराओं का पानी दूध की तरह धवल होता है,  चाहे कितनी ही वर्षा हो, बर्फ पड़े अथवा बाढ़ आए । इन सात धाराओं का पानी कभी भी गंदला या मटमैला नहीं होता है । हमेशा दूध की तरह धवल ही रहता है ।

त्रिलोकनाथ मंदिर में भगवान शिव की अप्रतिम सौंदर्य वाली छह भुजाओं वाली सफेद संगमरमर की मूर्ति मंदिर के गर्भगृह में स्थापित है । स्लेटी रंग की मूल प्रस्तर प्रतिमा दशकों पहले मंदिर से चोरी हो चुकी है । त्रिलोकीनाथ भगवान शिव के शीश पर तपस्या में लीन भगवान बुद्ध की लघु आकार में प्रतिमा विराजमान है । बुद्ध की प्रतिमा आकार में भगवान शिव की मूर्ति से बहुत छोटी लगती है । गर्भगृह में स्थापित मूर्तियां अमूल्य मणि माणिक्यों रत्नों और स्वर्ण आभुषणों से सजी हैं । पीत शुभ्र एवं केसरिया रंग के वस्त्रों से ढकी मूर्तियों से अवर्णनीय तेज सी निकलती हुई प्रतीत होता है जिससे श्रद्धालु अभिभूत होकर अपनी सुध बुध भुलाकर कुछ क्षणों के लिए उनके साथ एकाकार हो जाता है ।   लेकिन मंदिर का पुजारी बौध लामा है । ये लामा समय समय पर कुछ वर्षों के अंतराल में बदलते रहते हैं । मंदिर का प्रवेश द्वार अद्भुत और अनोखा है । मुख्य द्वार के दोनों ओर पत्थर के ऊंचे स्तंभ बने हुए  हैं जो छत (सीलिंग) तक खड़े हैं । इन स्तंभों को धर्म और पाप का स्तं‍भ कहा जाता है । प्रवेश द्वार और इन स्तं भों के मध्यग बहुत संकरी जगह है । इन स्तं भों के बीच अत्यंकत संकरे स्था न से होकर जो व्यक्ति गर्भगृह में प्रवेश करता है अथवा बाहर निकलता है, ऐसी मान्य्ता है कि वह सच्चा‍, ईमानदार और धर्मात्मां है । लेकिन जो इन संकरे द्वारों में फंस जाता है, तो वह पाखण्डी और पापी है ।

मंदिर में अखण्ड ज्योत जलती रहती है चाहे कैसा भी समय अथवा ऋतु हो । गर्भगृह में प्रवेश से पहले मंदिर के प्रांगण में स्फटिक पत्थर (ग्रेनाइट) का बना शिवलिंग है ।  नंदी और शिव के गण हैं । प्रांगण और गर्भगृह के मध्यम भाग में मने यानी धर्मचक्र सजे हैं । इन धर्मचक्रों में भोटी भाषा में मंत्र उर्त्कीण किये गए हैं । अंदर गर्भगृह में स्थापित प्रतिमाओं का दर्शन करने के पश्चात बाहर सजावट के साथ बनाए गए इन मने को दाएं  हाथ से घुमाना पुण्य का कार्य माना जाता है । इन्हें  फिराते हुए मन्नत मांगी जाती है अथवा वांछित इच्छा की प्राप्ति के लिए प्रार्थना की जाती है । बाहर आंगन में हवनकुंड में गड़ाए विशाल त्रिशूल पर आम हिंदु मंदिरों की भांति मन्नतों के रूप में बंधे धागे, रेशमी कपडों के टुकड़े और खतक लटके, बंधे सहज ही नजर आते हैं ।

इस मंदिर की विशेषता है कि यहां न अधिक आडंबर है, और ना ही अधिक बंदिशें अथवा   हिदायतें हैं । आम धार्मिक स्थानों के विपरीत यहां न लालची पंडित हैं,  ना लोभी पंडे पुजारी ।   न भिखारी हैं, न मांगने,  ठगने वाले लोग हैं । सरल स्वभाव के सीधे-सादे, भोले और धर्मभीरू लोग । छल, कपट से दूर ।

गर्मियों के ऋतु में देश के सुदूर क्षेत्रों से साधु संत त्रिलोकीनाथ के दर्शन हेतु पहुंचते हैं । इन पंक्तियों के लेखक को जुलाई माह के दौरान एक साधु मिले थे जिन्हों ने बताया था कि वह इस वर्ष यानी 2016 में उजैन में सम्पन्न हुए कुंभ में शामिल होकर त्रिलोकनाथ में भोले शंकर के दर्शन के लिए आए हैं । वास्तव में यह पहाड़ी प्रदेश विशेषकर लाहुल स्पीति के लोगों की अपने अराध्यल के प्रति श्रद्धा और भक्ति, विश्वास और आस्था का संगम स्थल है । इससे भी बढ़कर आस्था का स्वर्गिक एवं पावन स्थान है, जहां उनके विश्वास और आस्था के अनुसार उनके ईष्ट‍ देवों का वास है । लोगों का इन पर इतनी अटूट आस्था है कि कोई भी धार्मिक कार्य,  शुभ अनुष्ठान अथवा दुख और शोक के समय भी उस आयोजन, प्रयोजन का मुंह  सदैव त्रिलोकनाथ दिशा की ओर करके ही सम्पान्न किया जाता है ।

यहां भी बारह वर्षों के बाद कुंभ का मेला लगता है । पिछला कुंभ 2015 में सम्पन्न हुआ है । प्रति वर्ष अगस्त माह के दौरान पोरी का मेला लगता है । पोरी में लोग दूर दूर से और पूरे जिले के साथ साथ किन्नौर, लेह- लद्दाख से भी श्रद्धालु भक्ति और श्रद्धा भाव से ओत-प्रोत होकर आते हैं । पारंपरिक
वेशभूषा में विशेषकर महिलाओं को चोडू (कतर/कदर) में सजे -संवरे को देखते ही बनता है । यह मेला आपसी मेलजोल, लोक संस्कृूति को बचाए रखने तथा धार्मिक परंपरा के संरक्षण का भी पर्व है ।

पिछले कुछ वर्षों से अब इस मंदिर का रख- रखाव, पूजा आदि की जिम्मेंदारी यानी प्रशासन का भार हिमाचल प्रदेश सरकार ने अपने हाथ में ले लिया है ।

त्रिलोकनाथ दो संस्कृतियों, संस्कारों, दो धर्मों, अनुयायिओं, मान्यताओं और मर्यादाओं का संगम स्थल है । गर्मीं के मौसम में हिंदु और बौध दोनों ही धर्मों के लोग हजारों की संख्या में दर्शनार्थ, मन्नत मांगने अथवा मन्नत पूरी होने पर आभार व्यहक्त करने, प्रियजनों के बिछुड़ जाने के उपरान्त  तीर्थ स्थल का दर्शन करने के साथ साथ अपने उद्गारों, श्रद्धांजलि सुमन अर्पित, समर्पित करने आते हैं । त्रिलोकनाथ का मंदिर एक टीलेनुमा चट्टान  पर बना हुआ  है । चट्टान से नीचे हजारों फुट गहरी खाई है । दूर से ही मंदिर के शिखर से लहराता केसरिया ध्वज और सामने डोरियों से बंधे, टंगे बौध धर्म के पवित्र और आदर, मान का प्रतीक खत्तक, छपी हुई रंगीन पताकाएं, सफेद रेशमी दुपट्टा अथवा वस्त्र सभी दिशाओं में  फैले हवा में झूलते, फरफराते नजर आते हैं ।

किंवदंती है कि त्रिलोकनाथ गांव में  एक पुहाल (चरवाहा/गड़रिया ) रहता था । वह गांव वालों की भेडें चराता था । वह सुबह अपनी भेड़ों को चराने के लिए पर्वत शिखरों तक ले जाता था । भेड़ों के साथ साथ पर्वत शिखरों पर चढ़ते, चलते थक जाता, तो कुछ समय के लिए विश्राम करने के उद्देश्य से सो जाता था । इस दौरान स्वेर्गलोक की परियां आकर भेड़ों के दूध निकाल लेती थी । चरवाहे को कुछ पता नहीं चलता था । शाम को गांव के लोग जब पाते कि उनकी भेड़ों के दूध किसी ने निकाल लिया है, तो वे चरवाहे पर शक करते और उसे बुरा -भला कहते । गड़रिया बिना कसूर मन मसोसकर रह जाता ।
एक दिन उसने ठान लिया कि देखें भेड़ों को कौन दुह लेता है । इस रहस्य  को जानने के लिए उसने नींद में होने  का बहाना किया । उसने देखा, अनिंद्यय सौंदर्य वाली सात परियां भेड़ों के बीच आकर भेड़ों को दुहने लगी हैं । चरवाहे ने आज अपनी आंखों से उन्हें देख लिया था । उसने एक परी को पकड़ लिया और अपनी पीठ पर उठाकर गांव की ओर इस आशय से चल पड़ा कि गांव को दिखा सके कि भेड़ों का दुध चुराने वाली को उसने आज पकड़ लिया है । अपने साथी परी को चरवाहे की पकड़ से छुड़वाने के लिए अन्य छह परियां भी गड़रिया के पीछे चल पड़ी । जिस परी को गड़रिया ने पकड़ कर अपनी पीठ पर उठा रखा था, उसने अपना परिचय देते हुए गड़रिया को बताया कि वह परी है और शर्त के अनुसार पकड़ी गई परी को अपनी पीठ पर उठाए पुहाल आगे आगे चलता रहा और छह अन्य  परियां पीछे । चलते चलते चरवाहे को जिज्ञासा होने लगी और उसे लगा कि वह मूर्ख तो नहीं बन गया है । इस विचार के आते ही वह शर्त को भूल गया । उसने पीछे मुड़कर देखा । एक परी उसकी पीठ में और छह परियां परियां पीछे आ रही थीं । लेकिन पीछे मुड़ककर देख्तेउ ही गड़रिया शैल हो गया ।

सात परियां सात धाराओं के रूप में आज भी त्रिलोकनाथ मंदिर के सामने से निकलती हैं, और चन्द्रभागा नदी में समा जाती है । मान्यता है कि इन सात धाराओं का पानी दूध की तरह धवल होता है,  चाहे कितनी ही वर्षा हो, बर्फ पड़े अथवा बाढ़ आए । इन सात धाराओं का पानी कभी भी गंदला या मटमैला नहीं होता है । हमेशा दूध की तरह धवल ही रहता है ।

त्रिलोकनाथ मंदिर में भगवान शिव की अप्रतिम सौंदर्य वाली छह भुजाओं वाली सफेद संगमरमर की मूर्ति मंदिर के गर्भगृह में स्थापित है । स्लेटी रंग की मूल प्रस्तर प्रतिमा दशकों पहले मंदिर से चोरी हो चुकी है । त्रिलोकीनाथ भगवान शिव के शीश पर तपस्या में लीन भगवान बुद्ध की लघु आकार में प्रतिमा विराजमान है । बुद्ध की प्रतिमा आकार में भगवान शिव की मूर्ति से बहुत छोटी लगती है । गर्भगृह में स्थापित मूर्तियां अमूल्य मणि माणिक्यों रत्नों और स्वर्ण आभुषणों से सजी हैं । पीत शुभ्र एवं केसरिया रंग के वस्त्रों से ढकी मूर्तियों से अवर्णनीय तेज सी निकलती हुई प्रतीत होता है जिससे श्रद्धालु अभिभूत होकर अपनी सुध बुध भुलाकर कुछ क्षणों के लिए उनके साथ एकाकार हो जाता है ।   लेकिन मंदिर का पुजारी बौध लामा है । ये लामा समय समय पर कुछ वर्षों के अंतराल में बदलते रहते हैं । मंदिर का प्रवेश द्वार अद्भुत और अनोखा है । मुख्य द्वार के दोनों ओर पत्थर के ऊंचे स्तंभ बने हुए  हैं जो छत (सीलिंग) तक खड़े हैं । इन स्तंभों को धर्म और पाप का स्तं‍भ कहा जाता है । प्रवेश द्वार और इन स्तं भों के मध्यग बहुत संकरी जगह है । इन स्तं भों के बीच अत्यंकत संकरे स्था न से होकर जो व्यक्ति गर्भगृह में प्रवेश करता है अथवा बाहर निकलता है, ऐसी मान्य्ता है कि वह सच्चा‍, ईमानदार और धर्मात्मां है । लेकिन जो इन संकरे द्वारों में फंस जाता है, तो वह पाखण्डी और पापी है ।

मंदिर में अखण्ड ज्योत जलती रहती है चाहे कैसा भी समय अथवा ऋतु हो । गर्भगृह में प्रवेश से पहले मंदिर के प्रांगण में स्फटिक पत्थर (ग्रेनाइट) का बना शिवलिंग है ।  नंदी और शिव के गण हैं । प्रांगण और गर्भगृह के मध्यम भाग में मने यानी धर्मचक्र सजे हैं । इन धर्मचक्रों में भोटी भाषा में मंत्र उर्त्कीण किये गए हैं । अंदर गर्भगृह में स्थापित प्रतिमाओं का दर्शन करने के पश्चात बाहर सजावट के साथ बनाए गए इन मने को दाएं  हाथ से घुमाना पुण्य का कार्य माना जाता है । इन्हें  फिराते हुए मन्नत मांगी जाती है अथवा वांछित इच्छा की प्राप्ति के लिए प्रार्थना की जाती है । बाहर आंगन में हवनकुंड में गड़ाए विशाल त्रिशूल पर आम हिंदु मंदिरों की भांति मन्नतों के रूप में बंधे धागे, रेशमी कपडों के टुकड़े और खतक लटके, बंधे सहज ही नजर आते हैं ।

इस मंदिर की विशेषता है कि यहां न अधिक आडंबर है, और ना ही अधिक बंदिशें अथवा   हिदायतें हैं । आम धार्मिक स्थानों के विपरीत यहां न लालची पंडित हैं,  ना लोभी पंडे पुजारी ।   न भिखारी हैं, न मांगने,  ठगने वाले लोग हैं । सरल स्वभाव के सीधे-सादे, भोले और धर्मभीरू लोग । छल, कपट से दूर ।

गर्मियों के ऋतु में देश के सुदूर क्षेत्रों से साधु संत त्रिलोकीनाथ के दर्शन हेतु पहुंचते हैं । इन पंक्तियों के लेखक को जुलाई माह के दौरान एक साधु मिले थे जिन्हों ने बताया था कि वह इस वर्ष यानी 2016 में उजैन में सम्पन्न हुए कुंभ में शामिल होकर त्रिलोकनाथ में भोले शंकर के दर्शन के लिए आए हैं । वास्तव में यह पहाड़ी प्रदेश विशेषकर लाहुल स्पीति के लोगों की अपने अराध्यल के प्रति श्रद्धा और भक्ति, विश्वास और आस्था का संगम स्थल है । इससे भी बढ़कर आस्था का स्वर्गिक एवं पावन स्थान है, जहां उनके विश्वास और आस्था के अनुसार उनके ईष्ट‍ देवों का वास है । लोगों का इन पर इतनी अटूट आस्था है कि कोई भी धार्मिक कार्य,  शुभ अनुष्ठान अथवा दुख और शोक के समय भी उस आयोजन, प्रयोजन का मुंह  सदैव त्रिलोकनाथ दिशा की ओर करके ही सम्पान्न किया जाता है ।

यहां भी बारह वर्षों के बाद कुंभ का मेला लगता है । पिछला कुंभ 2015 में सम्पन्न हुआ है । प्रति वर्ष अगस्त माह के दौरान पोरी का मेला लगता है । पोरी में लोग दूर दूर से और पूरे जिले के साथ साथ किन्नौर, लेह- लद्दाख से भी श्रद्धालु भक्ति और श्रद्धा भाव से ओत-प्रोत होकर आते हैं । पारंपरिक
वेशभूषा में विशेषकर महिलाओं को चोडू (कतर/कदर) में सजे -संवरे को देखते ही बनता है । यह मेला आपसी मेलजोल, लोक संस्कृूति को बचाए रखने तथा धार्मिक परंपरा के संरक्षण का भी पर्व है ।

पिछले कुछ वर्षों से अब इस मंदिर का रख- रखाव, पूजा आदि की जिम्मेंदारी यानी प्रशासन का भार हिमाचल प्रदेश सरकार ने अपने हाथ में ले लिया है ।
