Himgiri Kalyan Smiti

This is for general information for the people of Lahoul and Spiti that there exists an organization named The Banvasi Kalyan Ashram on all India basis. Its chapter for Himachal Pradesh is known as Himgiri Kalyan Smiti. This is an organization which tries to do something for the welfare of the Tribal people of Himachal. The Lahoul Spiti group of this Smiti has identified a couple of fields which need more attention.

The first and foremost problem of the people of Lahoul valley is identified as the medical facility. Although the dreams could run very far, but I do not want to list them here. At present the effort has been to bring some specialists from outside and stage a medical camp in Lahoul. In 2009 a medical camp was set up at Keylong. In 2010 the camp was held at Udaipur. In both places far more than thousand patients were examined and/or treated. In 2011 this camp is again being set up at Keylong on 2nd 3rd and 4th of August . In this camp about six specialists are coming from Moulana Azad Medical College New Delhi. We hope that all those people who can not come out of Lahoul for getting check up done in Delhi, Chandigarh or Shimla etc. can take advantage of this camp.

The second important field identified is the education. There are people who can not send their children for education outside Lahoul. A plan is to establish a hostel in Kullu valley for such children on free or subsidized basis. This needs a lot of money. The organization does not take any money from the government. Therefore it is facing some problem at present.

The other fields identified are doing some search and research on the lost art, music, and herbal plants from the Himalayas.

So all those friends, who feel like doing something for their beloved Lahoul Spiti valley can join the group or simply help whatever way they can.
