The legend of the Lady of chandertal                                      An interesting folkstory is related in Spiti connected with the lake chandratal.It is told once long ago a shepherd from the village Rangrik used to take the flock of his sheep for grazing in the meadows near lake of chandratal.The shepherd was skilful in playing on flute and he enjoyed playing on the shore  of the clear moon lake.In the  lake there lived a khandoma(colloquially khandoma),dakini,a semi goddess.The khandoma could not resist the enchanting melody of the flute echoeing over the calm surface of the ethereal lake.She became a regular to the lake to listen to the music.One day as the shepherd was playing on flute the khandoma appeared before him in the earthly appearance.Then they met in this manner regularly.Meanwhile they had a handsome boy out of the union and they became very happy.The khandoma had instructed and had obtained vow from the shepherd not to disclose the secrecy to anybody else.  One day the shepherd,who was already a married man,was at his home in the village had an argument with his wife.In the course of the row he argued that he had a khandoma living in the moon lake as his spouse and before her she was insignificant.The wife challenged him to bring her home.The shepherd accepting the challenge went to the lake and started playing on flute as usual.The khandoma appeared with the child who then was infected with a severe skin disease and was looking very ugly.She handed over the child to the shepherd and she herself disappeared in the lake never to be seen again.The heavenly relationship of came to an end in this manner.It is told that the descendants of the deseased child still live in Rangrik,above the village (Chhopel Dorje)
